Information searching

Generally about AI-tools

Discuss with your teacher if you are using AI tools, agree on which tool to use and how it should be used. Carefully examine the AI tool in advance—what it can do, what its limitations are, who is behind the tool, and what happens to the data you enter into it. Source criticism is your responsibility: compare results from other sources and make sure to double-check all references. Always follow Hanken’s guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in studies and teaching.

Information searching with AI-tools

Information searching with the help of AI tools shifts the process from traditional keyword and Boolean operator-based searches to AI-assisted searching using natural language (prompts). Many article databases now offer AI solutions for building searches or analyzing search results.

Opportunities with AI in information searching

  • Brainstorm and discuss ideas, get oriented in a new topic
  • Create search phrases with Boolean operators that you can use for article searches
  • Identify keywords for your article search

Challenges with AI in information searching

  • Always double-check the results!
  • Always verify the terminology, for example, with course literature
  • References may be fabricated. AI tools can "hallucinate"
  • References may lack scientific quality and come from fake or predatory journals
  • AI tools tend to cling to incorrect information and may spread misinformation and bias
  • References may be incomplete, may include fabricated information, and lack important details
  • The latest research may not always be found
  • AI tools may not be able to reproduce the same search, so the same question can yield different answers. Systematicity and transparency are lacking
  • AI tools can behave illogically and may fail at simple tasks

AI-tools at Hanken

Before choosing an AI tool, find out what you can do with the tool, who created it, and what limitations it may have. Regardless of which tool you choose, never enter texts containing sensitive information.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot searches for information on the Internet and generates images based on prompts. Copilot is an AI chatbot that is useful in higher education studies for, for example, exploring a topic, planning information searches, summarizing information, and for translation.

Copilot can be used without the risk of data leakage outside your organization. Note that sensitive information should NOT be entered into Microsoft Copilot. Always verify that you are logged in with your Hanken account before using the service by identifying the green shield in the upper bar, and by checking that it says 'Enterprise data protection applies to this chat' when you hover your mouse over the shield.

Scopus AI

The citation database Scopus also includes the add-on module Scopus AI, where search results are generated with the help of AI. When searching in Scopus AI, you can use natural language (it doesn’t have to be in English). Keywords and search phrases with Boolean operators are not central.

With Scopus AI, you receive an AI-generated summary based on articles included in the Scopus database, published from 2003 onward. The information you enter into Scopus is neither stored nor used for educational purposes. No data exchange or reuse of data occurs. Always double-check the results and note that the same question, phrased differently but on the same topic, may yield a different answer at another time.

Free AI-tools (Apps)

Keenious is a semantic search tool. For example, you can paste in an abstract and find similar articles based on the text you searched with. Keenious Research Explorer can be downloaded and integrated with Word or Google Docs. Keenious is a Norwegian service with servers based in the EU. Keenious claims not to store the texts that users input.

Semantic Scholar is a search tool that is free to use but has some limitations regarding access to full-text articles. Semantic Scholar offers the features Skimming Assistant and Ask This Paper.
