Guide for new students

Welcome to Hanken's Library! This guide is aimed for helping new students on all levels getting started using the Hanken Library services. Here you also find useful tips on how to search information in databases and how to use proper reference technique.

Hanken Library in Helsinki

Hanken Library in Helsinki is located in the main building of Hanken. The library serves students and staff but is also open to anyone carrying out studies or research in the field of economics and business administration. Through the library collections you get access to a wide range of both printed and electronic literature within your field of study. 

The study environment in the library consists mainly of reading spaces. The computers in the computer room are reserved for students at Hanken. The Hanken wireless network is available in the library.

Library card

You need a library card and a PIN-code to be able to borrow books. Apply for a library card online (when you need to borrow a book).

After receiving your library card you need to activate the card in the Hanna search service. Watch the tutorial below (1:25) for instructions.

Borrowing and returning books

Use the self check machines for loans and returns.

The loan periods are:

  • course books: 7 days
  • other books: 28 days

When the library is closed, books can be returned in the box outside the library's main entrance. Borrowed material must be returned or renewed the latest by the due date. Items returned after the due date incur a fee: 

  • course books 0,70 €/book/day
  • other books 0,50 €/book/day

The overdue fines can be paid as either online payment through Hanna or by card at the library's service desk. More information on the lending rules is found through the link below:

Reservations

Unavailable items can be reserved online through Hanna.

  • You will receive an e-mail when the reserved books is ready for pick up. The reserved book will be kept on hold for you for 4 days.
  • You will find the book on the reservation shelf, arranged by your last name
  • You can reserve a book only if all copies are checked out
  • Reserving a book costs 1 euro and reservations for text books that remain unclaimed incur an extra 1 euro fee. 

Other libraries in the Helsinki region

As a student in Helsinki you can register as customer at other university libraries or public libraries. Through the national search portal Finna you can easily check what literature is available at other libraries in the Helsinki region or in other parts of Finland.

Interlibrary loans

Books and articles that aren't available in the Hanken library or in any other library in the Helsinki region (for students or staff in Helsinki) or in libraries in Vaasa (for students or staff in Vaasa), can be requested for free as inter library loan. More information about this service is available on the library’s homepage. 

Printing, copying, scanning

All printing, scanning and copying at Hanken is done with multi-function copiers (printer, scanner and copier in one unit). As a student you need to buy credits in order to be able to use the copiers. More information found through the link below.

Students with reading disabilities

Students who are visually impaired or have a print disability (i.e. dyslexia) may use text books in the format of audio books. Hanken library use the services of the Celia library (National library for accessible literature and publishing in Finland). 

Accessing text books as audio books is a service that requires forward planning and a long-term perspective. Contact the library at the start of your studies if this is a service you need. Make an appointment through the library's online booking calendar to learn more about the service, and to register as a customer in Celia.

You can also get extended loan period for printed books, and in this case a certificate of the impairment is needed. Send the certificate to hanna.sipilainen@hanken.fi and inform that you need this service.
