Ebooks at Hanken

• Course books that need to be available for the students in the library or as e-books must be registered in Sisu.
   
• We buy e-versions of printed course books, if they are available with a library license (IP access) and the price is sensible. The library license must preferably allow an unlimited number of concurrent users. From experience we know that ebooks with single user licenses in Hanna are poorly suited as textbooks. If you still want to use such an ebook in your course, we wish you to contact the library. We will investigate the possibility of extending the license.
   
• We buy the ebooks usually via so-called aggregators (ProQuest Ebook Central, Ebsco, Dawsonera etc.), not directly from the publisher.
   
• The library lacks full control of the ebooks: an ebook can disappear at any time from a platform, often because of contract disputes between the publisher and the author. Also, technical problems can make ebooks vulnerable.
   
• Publishers want to sell printed textbooks (= business). Available e-versions with IP access are often older editions.
   
• Hanken Library follows the Nordic model based on free education and free educational materials. It differs from the Anglo-American model based on tuition fees, which makes it possible for libraries to open the ebooks with a password (not IP) for each student.
   
• If an e-title is missing in Hanna, and you wish for it, please, contact library@hanken.fi or marlene.backman@hanken.fi. We will check if the ebook can be purchased with a library license for sensible price. Also, contact the library if you want to have lists of available ebooks on a particular subject.

License agreements with database suppliers usually don't permit redistribution. This means that uploading digital copies (i.e. pdf-files of articles) to Moodle is not allowed, even if password protected. Instead you should give the permanent link to the article, proceeded by the address to Hanken's proxy server. Read more
